Frequency of Canine Testicular Tumors: Study on 100 Dogs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Testicular tumours occur both in canine and human species. However, while the incidence of these tumours in man is has been constantly investigated and demonstrated an increase during last decades, a few data is published about the frequency of testicular tumours in canine species. The present study attempts to give an up-date on the frequency of testicular tumours in dogs. The histological examination of testes collected at necropsy from 100 dogs revealed the presence of testicular tumours in 21 subjects (21%). A total of 41 tumours were observed: 19 seminomas, 16 interstitial cell tumours and 4 Sertoli cell tumours. Bilateral tumours were detected in 8 of the 21 dogs. Moreover, 5 dogs showed more than one type of testicular tumour. The results of the present study demonstrate a high frequency of testicular tumours in the dog. Recently, the pathogenesis of human testicular tumours has been associated with the exposure to pesticides and plastic derived phthalates. Further studies are required to investigate if these substances can also play a role in the pathogenesis of canine testicular tumours.

Comparative immunohistochemical characterization of canine seminomas and Sertoli cell tumors
Primary testicular tumors are the most common causes of cancer in male dogs. Overall, the majority of canine patients should be cured by testicular surgery. However, tumor markers are not well-known in veterinary medicine. We sought to determine using immunohistochemistry whether the combined human testicular tumor markers (placental alkaline phosphatase, OCT3/4, CD30, alpha-fetoprotein, inhibi...
متن کاملEvaluation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 activity in serum and biochemical and hematological parameters in spontaneous canine cutaneous tumors before and after surgical treatment
Recently, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), in particular the gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9, generally considered as tumor markers for clinical applications. A longitudinal 2-years follow-up survey was performed on dogs with cutaneous tumor. Serum samples were obtained from 22 dogs with different cutaneous tumors and 22 health dogs at the time of surgery and one month, three months and one year af...
متن کاملTesticular Patch as Lymphatic Conduit in Canine Hind Limb
Background: Management of lymphedema is a challenging issue in surgery. A variety of operations have been used, albeit with little success. Objective: To investigate the efficacy of testicular patch as a lymphatic conduit. Methods: An incision was made on the inguinal area of 10 dogs and all lymph nodes of inguinal area were excised. The tunica albuginea and parenchyma near the hilum of testes...
متن کاملCanine testicular tumors: two types of seminomas can be differentiated by immunohistochemistry
BACKGROUND Testicular tumors are the most common genital neoplasms in male dogs, with Leydig cell tumors (LCT), seminomas (SEM), and Sertoli cell tumors (SCT) the most common forms. Human SEM are classified as classical (CSEM) or spermatocytic (SSEM). Intratubular germ cell neoplasia of undifferentiated origin (IGCNU) is another form of human testicular tumor. The aim of this study was to verif...
متن کاملCanine Mammary Gland Cancer Stem Cell and its Potential Role in Malignant Biologic Behavior
BACKGROUND:Canine mammary gland cancers are the most prevalent malignancies in dogs. There are different challenges regarding management of these cancers in dogs and human, one hypothesis is related to small cellular subset of tumor mass called cancer stem cell. These cells are therapy resistant and cause metastasis and relapse even after primary successful treatment. The well-identified phenot...
